What is your role at EPIC ‘Ohana? Youth Circle Facilitator

What is your favorite EPIC ‘Ohana story? Although I have been blessed with many, one really stands out. Three years ago, I worked with a young adult who was very cold to her supporters and everyone in the system. Before I met with her, her foster parents shared she might give me a hard time because she felt that she had been treated unfairly over the years. Our first visit started with her being very quiet. As we drove around she looked out of the window, not at me, as she answered my questions. “It doesn’t matter what my goals are everyone else has more say in my plans.” It was pretty obvious that she had strong feelings towards her many placements and unannounced school changes. After many texts and calls we finally were able to schedule a Youth Circle and I felt that our goal, at the very least, was to get her to smile in the meeting. I was determined to make that happen. She had mentioned that she really wanted to visit her brother who lived in Vegas. I asked for her permission to mention this goal and I coached her on how to use her voice to give us a true picture of what she really wanted to work on and her goals. Success! She shared her need to reconnect with her brother during the Youth Circle. Although, she also added “but I know this is far from happening ‘cause he lives in another state and I’ve mentioned this so much times before.” I knew that this was our chance to make her feel like she was being heard. The Social Worker (her fourth!) went to make a call and upon returning said, “I think this can happen.” Immediately the room filled with HOPE and she exclaimed “Wow, I finally feel like I am being heard,” with a tear in her eye. Eventually, her goal became a reality. She was able to visit her brother in Las Vegas and made many memories. And, since her Youth Circle, she has kept in touch and is in much better spirits when faced with her challenges as she enters the adult world.
